Update on new Government rules on wearing of face masks

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Following today's announcement, the Government and NPHET have recommended the wearing of face masks/coverings by children in 3rd class and above in primary schools.

They have advised that this measure is being introduced with immediate effect and on a temporary basis. This is subject to review in mid-February 2022. Wearing a face covering or mask does not negate the need to stay at home if symptomatic.

The wearing of face masks/coverings is to begin tomorrow.

The advice states that "Parents will need a medical certificate if they wish to avoid any child from third class upwards having to wear a face mask under the guidelines". Pupils in our ASD classes are exempt from wearing masks but if they wish to wear them that is not an issue.

While I understand that this latest measure seems unfair on our children it may offer us an extra layer of safety that is needed to avoid any societal or school closures. There are pupils (and parents) in our school community who have complex medical needs and it is important that we protect those who are more and most vulnerable.

Click here for advice just issued for pupils in 3rd - 6th class around the wearing of masks. Many of our pupils in 3rd class upwards have been wearing masks this week and have managed very well.

It is far from ideal to see our children in masks in our classrooms but rest assured that the staff of the school will be there to support them with this latest measure.

A letter has been sent out from the Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tony Holohan which I attach here: Letter from CMO

Any further information that is sent this evening will be put up tomorrow.

I thank you for your cooperation and let's work together to keep our pupils, staff and school safe.

Kind regards,

Audrey
