Erasmus Day 3 – The City of Tarragona
Day 3 was another super day!
We started the day with a 7:30 wake-up call. The children went to breakfast as usual and we took a private bus to the centre of Tarragona where we met with the two Spanish classes once again.
We began a 2.5 hour walking tour of the city. Tarragona, formerly known as Tarraco, has a rich history stretching back to Roman times. It was a significant Roman settlement. The city's Roman legacy is evident in its well-preserved archaeological remains, including the amphitheatre, forum, and circus. We learned all about the chariot races of ancient Roman times and the significance of the various numbers associated with them – such as the fact that they raced seven times around the circus representing the seven days of the week.
We finished our walking tour with a photograph down at the Amphitheatre and the old ruins. This is a beautiful historical place to visit and the children enjoyed it. We took a group photo with our Spanish friends and we made our way up to the playground to have lunch together. The Spanish school were very generous and provided the children with their drink, crisps, fruit and a lovely traditional sandwich known as a bocadillo. These are often filled with ham and cheese and the Spanish rub tomato on the bread. After that the children played in groups with brochures outlining the various rides in Port Aventura and they spent time talking about the ones that they would like to do tomorrow. At 3pm we made our way down to the port which is a lovely port with lots of very big yachts and boats. It also has cruise visits during the year. W went in two different groups - the first group went out on a boat trip out on the harbour and we learned all about the various imports and exports. Tarragona is the 5th busiest port in Spain and a very important port throughout Europe. Some of the children then went to the fish market and learned all about how to buy and sell fish. We said goodbye to our Spanish friends and made our way back to the hotel where the children got in for a very cold dip. They were very brave! We had dinner as usual and finished with a few games before bedtime. The children were absolutely fantastic today - wonderful representatives of Ballymitty National School!
