What is the Student Council?

Every September pupils from 2nd - 6th classes are asked if they would like to run for the election to be on the Student Council. Pupils must put forward their plan/manifesto outlining all the things they want to do to be a voice for pupils in the school. Pupils in each class vote for and elect the pupils they think will make a difference.

Some of the teachers work with the newly elected Student Council. They are guided as to how to form a committee and the positions of Chairperson & Secretary are elected by the committee.

The Committee meet once every month and they decide on different activities to make our school a better place to be.

Some of the activities organised by the Student Council from year to year are:

  • Organisation of a Christmas Fair where committee members ask all pupils to bring in toys, books, games, jigsaws etc. Pupils in each class go to the Fair and purchase items. Monies raised go to the Student Council. The classes get to bring ideas to the 4 pupil Committees on how best to spend the money. The Student Council make the final decision.
  • Christmas and Easter Raffles are held where pupils bring in spot prizes.
  • Ballymitty’s Got Talent: Any pupils can take part in this showcase of talent. Pupils put on a range of activities such as singing, music, acting, dancing, telling jokes, science experiments, drama, etc. The Student Council vote for a number of acts to go through to the Final. This is such a super event for the school because anyone and everyone can take part. The sky’s the limit!
  • Non-Uniform Day Fundraisers – Each Oct, April and June the Student Council decide on one charity to donate money to. The pupils usually donate to a local, national and international charity each year.
  • The Chairperson summarises the Student Council events and activities for the parents at end of term celebrations and they also add their news to the Principal's weekly update on the website.

We love our pupils having a voice in our school!
