Gizmo, a white barn owl and Nero, a baby owl came on a flying visit to school today!
They were introduced to the pupils in Junior Infants - 2nd class first! Colin, from Wexford Barn Owl Project, showed us the owls with his special gloves. They took a little fly around from glove to glove. And most of the kids got to have a brief look up close and a light touch of their soft feathers. Mark, from Wexford Barn Owl Project showed a presentation and talked all about the conservation of owls.
Here are the owls with the Junior end of the school:

The owls then flew off to the senior classes!

They finished by visiting An Choill Bheag!

Colin said one of the aims of the Wexford Barn Owl Project is to get into schools from an educational perspective. They have their own page @wexfordbarnowl and now have over 1,000 people following the page. They ultimately want to raise awareness of the need for Barn Owl conservation around the County. They have also asked for sightings of Barn Owls. They were amazed when they received ten times the number of Barn Owl sightings in Wexford in a nine month period, than had been submitted to BirdWatch Ireland centrally over the preceding ten years..!!
So if you spot one, take a photo and send it on to them!
Our thanks to Pádraig Doyle from Wellington Bridge Tidy Towns Committee for organising this!
Jack Murphy, our school Mayor, presented the visitors with a small donation from the school!
