Active Schools Week

We enjoyed a rounders tournament, circuits, skipping and hula hooping during 'Active Schools Week'.

Tin Foil Embossed Art

We used string to make shapes and designs on cardboard. We then glued tinfoil on top and coloured our creations.

Ryan Tubridy

On the 23rd of May we had a very exciting day. We headed off on a bus to Loreto Secondary school to meet somebody very special... Ryan Tubridy. Ryan came to Loreto to visit Úna, Ms. O'Grady's harp student who was on the Late Late Toy Show Last Year.

Ryan spent some time chatting to us and we performed 'When I Grow Up' for him. Ryan said some lovely words about our song on his radio show this morning. We even made his social media yesterday.

Swimming

We had an amazing 6 weeks of swimming lessons in Whitford Swimming Pool.

Gaeilge

This month our Irish theme was 'An Aimsir' - the weather. We were busy learning lots of vocabulary and phrases about the weather. We even practised giving the weather forecast. We played 'Cluiche Kim' and a board game to practise the new vocabulary.

Our P.E. focus was games. We were busy practising our rounders and basketball skills.

English - Narrative Writing

We have been exploring narrative writing. We wrote stories about a day at an amusement park. We used our senses when we were describing the setting to help create a picture in the readers mind.

We really enjoyed the semi-finals of B.G.T. Well done to all the boys and girls who took part.

S.T.E.M.

We tried to make bridges using paper and wooden blocks. We folded the piece of paper in lots of different ways to see which would be the strongest.

We finished off the Incredible Edibles programme by tasting lots of different fruits. We made some fruit faces and fruit skewers and enjoyed some delicious smoothies too!

European Week

We celebrated European Week in May. Three teachers from Spain came to visit our school as part of the Erasmus programme. They told us about their schools and showed us a Spanish dance. We performed 'An Damhsa Mór' for them. To finish European week we had a European Quiz with 4th, 5th and 6th Class.

Innocent Big Grow

We took part in the Innocent Big Grow initiative. We planted radish, peas and salad leaves.

3D Shapes

Procedural Writing

Our writing genre for April was 'Procedural Writing'. We wrote our own milkshake recipes. After we wrote our recipes we got to make milkshakes. They were scrumptious!

Science ~ States of Matter

This month for science we were learning all about 'states of matter'. There are three states : solids, liquids and gases. We learned that liquids can change shape easily but you need to apply pressure to a solid if you want to change its shape. We carried out an experiment using cornflour and water to show how some things can be both a solid and a liquid. When you mix cornflour and water together it is called 'Oobleck'. When you apply pressure to oobleck it is a solid when you don't apply pressure it is a liquid.

Incredible Edibles

We are taking part in the Incredible Edibles programme from Agri Aware. We has been busy planting some strawberries, potatoes, lettuce, spinach, carrots, turnips and chives. We have also been learning about how fruits and vegetables are grown in Ireland. We also found out where our food comes from and wether the food we eat is processed or unprocessed.

Seachtain na Gaeilge

In the run up to St. Patrick's Day we celebrated Seachtain na Gaeilge. We were busy using as much Irish as possible and we also learned some Irish Céilí Dances. We learned the 'Walls of Limerick' and 'An Damhsa Mhór'. We really enjoyed our Céilí Mór outside with the boys and girls from 1st-6th Class.

World Book Day

To celebrate World Book Day we all dressed up as characters from our favourite books. Ms. O'Grady had a very hard decision trying to pick a winner from our classroom. Here are all of the amazing costumes.

Pancake Tuesday

Did you know that Pancake Tuesday is celebrated all over the world! Every country has different 'Pancake Tuesday' traditions. In England they have pancake races.Pancake Tuesday is also known as Shrove Tuesday which marks the start of Lent. Pancake Tuesday in Irish is Máirt na hInide'. Here we are enjoying some delicious egg free pancakes.

China and Chinese New Year

This month our focus for S.E.S.E. was China and Chinese New Year. We read about the myth of the 'Great Race'. This is where the Chinese Zodiac came from. We were all born during the year of the 'Dragon'. This year is the year of the 'Tiger'.

We were eager to find out what our names would we be in Chinese so Ms. O'Grady searched our names on an online translator. The translator isn't always accurate but this is what they might look like in Chinese.

Valentine's Day

We really enjoyed celebrating Valentine's Day in school. We listened to the Story of St. Valentine. We learned about all the different Valentine's Day Superstitions and explored how Valentines day is celebrated around the world.

Maths

2D Sahapes

We learned all about 2D Shapes, particularly regular and irregular shapes. We created lots of different regular and irregular 2D Shapes using 'geoboards'.

We also learned about tessellation. Some 2D shapes can tessellate, some can't.

Weight

How many grams are in a kilogram? We have been busy learning about weight including how to add and subtract weight. Our favourite activity was estimating and measuring the weight of items in our classroom using the weighing scales. We even held some weights.

P.E.

Our Fundamental Movement Skill focus for this month was 'running'. We played lots of different games to practise this skill. Our favourite games were 'Rock, Paper, Scissors' and 'Rob the Nest'.

We also learned the rules and skills of 'Tag Rugby' this month. There are lots of budding rugby players in 3rd Class.

On the 1st of February we celebrated St. Brigid's Day. We really enjoyed listening to the story of St. Brigid. We made St. Brigid's Day Crosses using paper weaving.

We celebrated the New Year by reflecting on 2021 and looking forward to 2022. We talked about our goals for 2022.

Hundertwasser Inspired Landscapes

We explored the life and work of Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Inspired by his work, we created our own landscapes. We think they look very funky.

Music

During our music lessons we've been exploring rhythm. We practised making rhythms using clapping, tapping and percussion instruments. Here we are making rhythms with percussion instruments.

Report Writing

We have been exploring the writing genre of 'Report Writing'. In pairs we picked an animal. Using the iPads we researched our animals. We then wrote a report about the animal. Once our reports were finished we typed them on the laptops.

Our Irish theme for January was 'Ar Scoil'. We have been busy learning lots of 'Ar Scoil' phrases and vocabulary. We really enjoyed practising the new vocabulary and phrases by playing some games.

Maths

We completed a Length Maths Trail. We were challenged to estimate and measure lots of different items using our rulers and metre sticks.

B.U.S. Programme

Some of the boys and girls in 3rd class have been busy working with Ms. McCarthy on the B.U.S. Programme. They made some delicious chicken soup for us. We really enjoyed it. Thank you Ms. McCarthy.

Our Body

For science this month we were learning about 'How our Body Moves'. We learned about our bones and muscles and how they help our body to move. We carried out an investigation using pipe cleaners and straws to see how our spine moves and what makes our back flexible.

The countdown to Christmas has begun in 3rd class and there is definitely lots of Christmas Cheer in our classroom.

Special Arrival

We had a special arrival from the North Pole. Our elf 'Twinkle Toes' arrived on December 1st. Twinkle Toes got up to lots of mischief in our classroom. Twinkle Toes ate our treats from the advent calendar, made a snow angel from flour, had a starburst fight, hung out with Rudolf, made sure she was part of our Christmas performance by hanging on the mic stand and watched T.V. with Ruby's elf who arrived into school in her Christmas house.

Christmas Fashion Designer Competition

This year Ms. Mc.Carthy asked us to create a Christmas outfit. There were some very creative jumpers, t-shirts, masks, hairbands and hats in our classroom. The winner in 3rd Class was Adam Ryan. It was a very difficult decision for the judges. Well done to everyone who took part.

Christmas Around the World

For the month of December our S.E.S.E. theme was 'Christmas Around the World'. We explored how Christmas Traditions in other countries are similar and different to our traditions. We really enjoyed joining Tina Killackey and Marketa Rygolova on a Christmas adventure to see how Christmas is celebrated in Germany, France, Spain and the Czech Republic.

During our maths lessons we have been busy playing lots of different games to practise our times tables. The boys and girls in 3rd class are Times Tables Masters!

Online Webinars

We had so much fun tuning into some festive webinars hosted by the Wexford Education Centre. We really enjoyed the Christmas sing-along with Aileen and the Christmas themed storytelling and creative writing workshop with Irish Author Caroline Busher. We used our imagination to develop some Christmas themed characters in a winter wonderland setting. We definitely have some budding authors in 3rd class.

In November We Remember

In religion we have been learning about 'All Saints Day' and 'All Souls Day'. We all wrote the name of somebody special in our lives that we would like to remember on a flower. We created a garden 'Garden of Remembrance' with our flowers.

Toy Show

We were super excited watching the Toy Show this year. We got to see Ms. O'Grady's harp student Úna perform on the show. We even got a special message from Ryan Tubridy. Click here to hear it. We hope he'll be down to visit us in Ballymitty soon!

Space

During the month of November we explored the theme of 'Space' for S.E.S.E. and Art. We learned about how we have 'day and night' and 'seasons'. We also learned about the 'Space Race'.

Clay Aliens and Monsters

We had lots of fun making our own aliens or monsters from clay. We had to follow 4 steps to create our masterpieces.

Step 1: Moulding our piece of clay into a ball. Step 2: We turned our ball of clay into a pinch pot by putting our thumbs into the clay and pinching the clay out. We then squashed it down to turn it into a mouth. Step 3: We made facial features for our monsters and aliens. We had to use the techniques of 'scoring' and 'slipping' to make sure our pieces were attached securely to our alien / monster mouths. Step 4: Painting our clay aliens.

In a Galaxy Far, Far Away

We created space themed scenes using chalk pastels. We used the smudging technique to make our planets look 3D. We had small planets, big planets and colourful planets! We put all sorts of interesting things in the background e.g. shooting stars, astronauts and even spaceships! All of our 'Outer Space' scenes looked so unique, especially with the 'splatter painted' stars. They really looked magical! We all had so much fun creating them.

We had so much fun during 'Science Week 2021'. We did lots of fun activities and carried out a different science experiment each day. We even watched some 'Virtual Science Shows'.

Beebots

We had so much fun programming our 'Beebots'. We used our beebots to play snakes and ladders, climb a ladder, manoeuvre around our space map and to also play twister.

Izak9's

We used the Izak9 cubes for our Maths Problem Solving lesson. We put the numbers in order, found the multiples of 3 and put the cubes in alphabetical order (this was very tricky!). Finally, we had to put all 27 cubes back together by having a 2D shape on each side.

A visit Tom (Mr. Rose)

We were thrilled that a very special Scientist called Tom came to visit our class. We learned lots of new scientific information from Tom. The highlight was getting to look into his microscope. Tom even brought in some Science Week gifts for us.

We watched some Virtual Science Shows online from the Science Foundation of Ireland. During one of the shows we learned about the animals in Dublin Zoo.

Gymnastics

This month for P.E. we focused on the strand of gymnastics. Here are some pictures of us practising some balances and playing soccer while in the 'table top' position. In small groups we created our own gymnastic sequences using balances.

Hilltown Castle

We focused on local history this month. We explored the history of Hilltown Castle. We were very lucky to receive lots of information about Hilltown Castle from local historian Ann Farrell. Another busy month in 3rd Class. We were busy doing lots of Halloween themed activities.

Halloween Musical Performance

In 3rd Class we really enjoy singing and performing. Click here to listen to our Halloween Musical Performance.

Our first piece is 'The Ghost of John'. This song was a little bit tricky at first as we were split into two groups and we sang it as a 'round'.

The second piece is a song you will all know. It's the Addams Family theme song. We had great fun using our pencil cases to create a rhythm pattern to match the beat of the song.

We also made some Spooky Halloween Soundscapes using our voices and body percussion. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to record these.

Pumpkin Carving

We were against the clock to try and empty our pumpkins. Once our pumpkins were empty we got to design our pumpkins. We were very careful when we were carving our pumpkins. Ms. O'Grady was super impressed with how well we worked in our groups.

Puking Pumpkins

We turned our pumpkins into puking pumpkins. We made a reaction inside our pumpkins to make them puke. We used washing up liquid, food colouring, baking powder and vinegar to make the reaction.

Halloween Prize Giving & Best Halloween Costume

Congratulations to Corey, Billy, Lorcán, Ella, Josh, Sophie and Eva who received awards during our Halloween Prize Giving and Well done to Aaron who was the winner of the best costume in 3rd class.

Haunted Houses

Look at our amazing 'Haunted Houses'. We practised drawing our haunted houses on our white boards first. Then, we drew them on black card, cut them out and used yellow paper to add some windows and doors. Finally, we created a spooky background for our Haunted Houses using oil pastels.

Spider Webs

We created 'Spider Webs' using oil pastels, water colours and salt. We learned that oil pastels resist the water colours and that they don't mix. We threw salt on our wet paintings and it made the spider web colours 'pop'.

Online Interview with David Walliams

Ms. O'Grady had a special treat for us this month. We got to watch an interview with David Walliams on zoom along with lots and lots of other schools across Ireland. David read us an extract from the 'World's Worst Children' and 'Gangsta Granny'. He even showed us his dog. David finished his interview by giving us some motivating quotes : 'to be good at anything you need to try' and 'to go for our dreams and if we pursue what we love we will live a happy life'.

Primary Movement

We are always so excited when it is 2.15pm on Thursdays and Fridays as it's time for Primary Movement with Ms. Maloney. We really enjoyed learning some new songs and actions this month.

Art

We explored water colour and printing techniques to create some leaf art. We created leaf prints using styrofoam sheets. We then coloured the leaf prints with markers and printed them onto damp sheets of paper.

Maths

This month in Maths we were learning about data and graphs. We really enjoyed making our own pictograms, block graphs and bar charts. Here we are making a pictogram of our favourite colours.

Conkers

Max brought in some conkers to show us. We had great fun playing a game of 'conkers'.

Explanation Writing

This month our writing genre was 'Explanation Writing'. We were learning all about the 'Water Cycle' in Geography so we wrote explanations about 'How the Water Cycle Works'. We shared our writing with the class by using our 'Author's Chair'.

Friendship Week

This month we celebrated 'Friendship Week'. Please click here to watch our Friendship Week Video. In our video you will see our Friendship Week Posters and you will be able to hear our class singing 'Our Forever Friends'.

Our Forever Friends

We listened to lots of different friendship themed songs. We chose 'My Forever Friend' by Charlie Landsborough. We got creative and changed the words to suit our class.

Poster Competition

We had our annual poster competition. Well done to all the boys and girls who created fantastic posters. A special mention to Billy who was the winner in 3rd Class.

The key to friendship

We talked about the traits of a good friend. We came up with lots and lots of traits including being helpful, uplifting, inclusive, happy, thoughtful, friendly and kind. During our art lesson we all designed a key and wrote a special trait on our key.

On Saturday the 4th of September we celebrated our First Holy Communion. We all had a fantastic day!

It's hard to see in this photo but we used lots of different types of lines, shapes and patterns to make colourful backgrounds for our 'Funky Portraits'.

Birds of Colour

During our 'Birds of Colour' art lesson we explored colour mixing.

We were only allowed to use the three primary colours: red, blue and yellow.

We mixed red & yellow to make orange ; blue & yellow to make green and red & blue to make purple.

Orange, green and purple are secondary colours.

iPads

In Geography we were learning all about Wexford. Wexford is a maritime county and it is also known as the model county. We used the iPads to research information about Co. Wexford.

Music

During our music lessons we were exploring our vocal sounds. We practised following a graphic score. We really enjoyed taking turns to conduct our class orchestra.

P.E.

For the month of September our theme was 'Games'. We played 'Rob the Nest', 'Noman's Land' and 'Basketball'. We focused on 'Basketball'.

We practised some of the key skills for basketball; chest passing, bounce passing, dribbling and shooting. We then, practised all of these skills together by playing a basketball match. We had so much fun practising these skills.
